A Washington County man was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital on Sunday, September 21, following a collision with an off-duty Salem police officer on Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 4:00 p.m., the Salem Police Department requested assistance from the Indiana State Police to investigate a crash at the intersection of Old State Road 56 and North Canton Road, near Canton. Trooper Brett Walters responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that Officer Tony England, an off-duty Salem Police Department officer, was driving a department cruiser westbound on Old State Road 56 and was preparing to turn left onto North Canton Road. Meanwhile, a bicyclist, Terry L. Eagle, age sixty, was traveling eastbound on Old State Road 56, approaching the intersection. According to Trooper Walters, Officer England began his left turn onto Canton Road, where he failed to see the bicycle and struck Mr. Eagle.
Mr. Eagle sustained injuries in the collision and was transported by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Salem before being airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Authorities do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident. The investigation is ongoing.
