“Leapin’ Lizards!” The stage is set for a summer filled with music, laughter, and a little red-headed orphan who’s charmed generations. Washington County Theatre has officially announced auditions for its upcoming production of Annie, one of the most beloved musicals in Broadway history.

Directed by Mark G. Carter and Tara Kritzer, with musical direction by Daniel Main, this heartwarming classic will take center stage August 22–24 at the Salem Middle School Auditorium, and community members of all ages are invited to audition.
Audition Details
Auditions will be held at Gary W. Hartsook Hall, 405 N. Shelby Street in Salem (behind the Salem Church of the Nazarene), and are split over two evenings:
June 9 – For ages 5 to 13
6:30–7:30 p.m. – General child auditions
7:30–8:30 p.m. – Auditions for the role of Annie (open only to girls ages 9–13)

7:30–8:30 p.m. – Auditions for featured roles including Daddy Warbucks, Miss Hannigan, Rooster, Lily, and Grace
Everyone auditioning is asked to bring a list of any scheduling conflicts. A small $10 fee is due at the time of audition to help cover the cost of the production, and the theatre has announced that everyone who auditions will be cast.
A Timeless Story
Set in 1930s New York during the Great Depression, Annie follows the spirited young orphan as she sets out to find the parents who left her behind on the doorstep of a dreary orphanage run by the comically wicked Miss Hannigan. Along the way, she wins the heart of billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks, changes the lives of those around her, and reminds audiences that hope can shine even in the darkest of times.
The musical features unforgettable songs including “Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” and the show-stopping anthem “Tomorrow.” With its blend of heart, humor, and toe-tapping tunes, Annie continues to inspire audiences of all ages more than four decades after it first hit the stage.
A Bit of Broadway History
Annie made its Broadway debut in 1977, with music by the late Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and a book by Thomas Meehan. Based on Harold Gray’s long-running comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the musical was an instant hit, winning seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. It has since seen numerous revivals, national tours, and film adaptations, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of American musical theatre.
What to Expect at Auditions
Those auditioning for principal roles will be asked to perform a song from the show that suits their character. General auditioners may be asked to sing, read from the script, or join in simple movement exercises. No prior experience is necessary, and performers of all backgrounds are encouraged to try out.
