A Community Posting by the Washington County Community Foundation

As artificial intelligence becomes a growing part of everyday life, the Washington County Community Foundation is inviting parents and guardians of Washington County students to learn how to keep their children safe in an AI driven world.
The Foundation will host a series of free community sessions titled How to Keep Your Kids Safe in an AI World, featuring educator and technology expert Bhavani Kola. With more than two decades of classroom experience, Kola brings a practical and thoughtful approach to helping families understand both the opportunities and risks that come with AI.
These sessions are open to all parents and guardians of school aged children in Washington County and will focus on real world guidance. Topics will include how children are currently using AI tools, how to recognize potential risks such as misinformation and privacy concerns, and how families can set healthy boundaries around technology use.
“AI is already shaping how our children learn, communicate, and explore the world,” said Judy Johnson, Executive Director of the Washington County Community Foundation. “This is not something coming someday. It is here now. We want parents to feel confident, not overwhelmed, and to walk away with simple ways to guide their children safely. We are so grateful to our generous donors who give to our community through the Foundation. They are the reason we can offer such a wonderful learning opportunity.”
Artificial intelligence tools are now widely available to students of all ages. Many are using AI for homework help, creative projects, and online interaction. While these tools can support learning and spark curiosity, they can also expose children to inaccurate information, inappropriate content, or unsafe online interactions if not used carefully. Experts recommend that parents stay engaged, ask questions, and set clear expectations around how AI is used at home.
The sessions will be held on three evenings across the county:
• June 2, 2026 | 6:00 to 8:00 PM
East Washington Performing Arts Center
• June 3, 2026 | 6:00 to 8:00 PM
Salem High School Presentation Room
• June 4, 2026 | 6:00 to 8:00 PM
West Washington High School Library
Attendees are encouraged to arrive ready to listen, ask questions, and leave with practical tools they can use right away. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by May 22.
“This is about helping families feel prepared,” Johnson added. “When parents understand the tools their children are using, they can turn uncertainty into opportunity.”
Parents and guardians can register here.
