  • For the readers who may not be familiar with the position, how would you describe the primary responsibilities of Township Trustee?

Primarily responsibilities range from the following, but it may include other duties prescribed by statute: providing fire protection, performing duties of Fence Viewer, providing and maintaining cemeteries in the township, destroying noxious or detrimental plants and weeds when reported, keeping township records open for public inspection, attending all meetings of the township legislative body, and administering township assistance The trustee is assisted by three-member Township Board that is also elected.

  • Can you tell us about your background and any experience that has prepared you to serve as Township Trustee?

I have worked at Cummins for the last 19 years. I am a toolmaker by trade, but for 14 of those 19 years I have been an elected Union official, ranging from shop steward and multiple committee appointments to currently serving two terms as the elected Vice President of the DWU (Diesel Workers Union).

  • What motivated you to run for Township Trustee?

As a Union official, the main responsibility is helping our members and advocating to help settle disputes by forming good working relationships to reach or achieve creative and constructive resolutions through problem solving. I would like to take that knowledge and get more involved here at home to give back to the community.

  • How do you balance helping residents in need while also being a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars?

It is about making yourself accessible, and working to form a good working relationship with the Township Board. You need to make sure you take the time to accurately assess every situation. You know, put in the leg work. Not just checking the box.

  • How would you approach transparency and accountability in the management of township funds and services?

I'd do everything possible to be open and transparent in all services. It should be a partnership with all parties.

  • How do you plan to work with the Township Board, county officials, and community organizations to best serve residents?

Straightforward, open communication with the Board and other officials as needed. It has been my experience that monthly meetings are great, but some issues must be managed in real time.

  • What qualities or experiences do you believe may set you apart from any opponent(s) in this race?

I feel my years as an elected Union official have helped me prepare or set me apart from the other candidates. From eight years of being a shop steward to two consecutive three-year terms as Vice President of the DWU, it truly is about helping others. Whether it's problem solving, conflict resolution or helping members navigate the FMLA/STD claims

process, helping others is the driving factor. I have been a part of five collective bargaining agreements (contract negotiations) and multiple arbitration proceedings that involved hours of investigations and preparation. So, I am not a stranger to meetings or the Board room.

  • Do you have any final thoughts you’d like to share with township residents and Washington county voters?

For me, Washington County and Monroe Township are special places. Most of my family were born and raised here. In my youth I enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping in its beautiful landscape. It is rich in culture and history. I would love the opportunity to give back to the Township and its residents.
