Funeral fundraiser established after death of Pekin teen Hunter Rowley; family releases statement

A fundraising effort has been launched to help the family of 17-year-old Hunter Blaine Rowley, who tragically passed away Saturday evening following an apparent shooting and vehicle crash in rural Washington County.
Hunter’s mother, Becca Rowley Thomas, shared a statement with The Washington County Times requesting support for funeral expenses and explaining the family’s wishes as they navigate the sudden loss.
“My family is heartbroken by the loss of my son, Hunter. At just 17 years old, his life was taken far too soon, leaving behind family and friends who loved him deeply.
“As we mourn this unimaginable loss, we are asking for help with funeral expenses. Hunter's little sister had only one request – that her brother be buried rather than cremated so she would always have a place to visit him.
“Any contribution, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated and will help us give Hunter the farewell he deserves. Thank you for your prayers, kindness, and support during this difficult time.”
Family members say the loss has been especially difficult given recent tragedy in their immediate family. Hunter’s aunt, Sam Rowley, described the family as close-knit and noted they had recently experienced another major loss.
“We just lost my dad, who was pretty much (Hunter's) father figure, late August last year,” she said.
The fundraiser comes as the family begins preparing funeral arrangements and seeks community support during what they describe as an overwhelming time of grief.
The incident that led to Hunter’s death remains under investigation by Indiana State Police detectives from the Sellersburg Post.
According to ISP, the case involves an apparent shooting and subsequent vehicle crash that occurred Saturday evening in the 8000 block of South Big Springs Road in rural Washington County. First responders initially responded to an automated crash alert at approximately 7:30 p.m., before requesting assistance from state police after arriving on scene.
Investigators say crime scene units processed the area and collected evidence while detectives continue interviews and reconstruction of events. Officials have stated there is no indication of ongoing danger to the public.
Authorities have released limited additional information, noting the investigation remains active and ongoing. Further updates are expected as detectives continue their work.
