James Lee “Jimmy” Morris, age 75 of Jeffersonville, passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026. Born to the late Leman and Dorothy (Mofield) Morris, Jimmy was a man of many talents, many passions, and a heart that made room for everyone he met. For more than three decades, Jimmy worked for The Morris Company, where he was a skilled welder and sheet metal fabricator. He took great pride in his work and in the knowledge he gained throughout his long career. Jimmy was a passionate, gifted, self-taught musician.

With a natural ear for music, he could pick up nearly any stringed instrument and teach himself to play. He played guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, harpsichord, and piano, all by ear. Music was meant to be enjoyed, and Jimmy certainly did just that—playing and singing with all the enthusiasm and volume he could muster. His music, like his personality, was impossible to ignore.

Another passion for Jimmy was found in the world of birds. A true bird watcher and enthusiast, Jimmy loved raising and breeding his cherished birds, especially his beautiful love birds & parakeets. With an impressive combination of science, patience, and skill, he could breed specific colors and was always eager to share what he knew. His knowledge of birds became so well respected that friends and fellow bird lovers often turned to him for advice. Jimmy even wrote articles on the subject, sharing his expertise and love of birding with others. He wasn’t simply a bird lover—he was a lifelong student and teacher of the birds he cherished.

He loved nature and the outdoors, and found joy in simply being surrounded by the beauty of the world around him. Most of all, though, Jimmy loved his family. A true jokester and comedian, Jimmy could make friends wherever he went and never met a stranger. His personality had a way of filling a room, and at family gatherings and reunions, it wasn’t long before everyone had gathered around him to hear one of his famous tall tales. There was always a story, always a joke, and usually plenty of laughter. Jimmy had a gift for making people feel welcome, and his laughter and larger-than-life spirit will be deeply missed.

Above all, Jimmy was a family man. Nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by those he loved. He especially treasured time with his grandchildren, happily letting himself be covered in grandbabies while their giggles and laughter filled the room. Those precious moments of love and togetherness were among his greatest treasures.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Melanie (Blakenbaker) Morris; his sister, Lisa Morris; and his brother, Mark Morris. He leaves to cherish his memory, devoted sons: Nick Morris (Tiffany) of Jeffersonville and Brian Foster (Debby) of Pekin; loving daughter, Amber Purlee (Matt) of Pekin; precious grandchildren, Adelyn, Nixon, Jacob, Abby, Clayton, and Melanie; sisters, Barbie Morris of Jeffersonville, Janet Riddle (Randy) of Charlestown, & Pam Nolan (Kenny) of Charlestown; several great-grandchildren, and many extended family members, friends, and fellow music enthusiasts whose lives were touched by his generous spirit.

Jimmy leaves behind a beautiful legacy—not only in the family he loved so dearly, but in the knowledge he shared, the music he made, the stories he told, the laughter he created, and the countless lives he brightened simply by being himself. He will be remembered for his curious mind, his love of nature and birds, his music, his sense of humor, and, most of all, his enormous love for his family. Though he may no longer be sitting among his beloved birds or filling the house with music and laughter, the memories he created will continue to sing.

Funeral services will be held at 7PM on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville). Friends may visit from 5:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
