Obituary: Christine Schmidt

Christine Schmidt, 89, of Salem, passed away at her residence on Thursday, May 1, 2025. Born March 28, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Noah D. Wickey and Mattie (Schwartz) Wickey.


Christine was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish.


Christine is survived by her husband, Moses E. Schmidt; 12 children: Michael C. (Margaret) Schmidt, William C. (Martha) Schmidt, Emanuel C. (Susan) Schmidt, Martin C. (Mattie) Schmidt, Daniel C. (Dena) Schmidt, Phenas C. (Effiemae) Schmidt, Mattie (Jonas) Wengerd, Anna (Amos) Girod, Mose C. (Fannie) Schmidt, Simon C. (Christine) Schmidt, Christine C. (Simon) Girod, and Rebecca (William) Byler; 2 brothers: Martin N. Wickey and David N. Wickey; 3 sisters: Maryann (Joe) Hilty, Mattie (Wickey) Schwartz, and Mandy (Jonas) Schwartz; a sister-in-law, Hatie (Wickey) Lengacher; 125 grandchildren, 373 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah D. and Mattie Wickey; 2 brothers: Martin N. Wickey, and David N. Wickey; 2 sisters: Josephine Schwartz and Salome Eicher; 3 brothers-in-law: Leroy Schwartz, Jake B. Schwartz, and Clarence Eicher; a sister-in-law, Emma Schwartz; and 2 grandsons: Nathan E. Schmidt and Nathaniel R. Byler.


Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Emanuel C. Schmidt residence, located at 1772 N. Naugle Road, Salem.


Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
