Obituary: Walter Raleigh Deaton

Walter Raleigh Deaton, 81, of Little York, Indiana passed away April 23, 2025, at home with his loving family by his side.


He was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky on November 13, 1943, to John Logan and Beulah Deaton Deaton. He came to Jackson County at the age of 10 and has lived here since. He graduated from Salem High School in Salem and married Veva Sue Greathouse on July 29, 1962.


His work has always involved farming. He worked for Morgan Packing, Farm Dept., Lucas Ag Center and retired from Crop Productions in 2017. He continued to work the family farm in Jackson County. He was also a fireman for the Little York Fire Dept. for many years.


He has been a member at Mt. Hebron Church of Christ for 45 years. He enjoyed life, firework shows and all things farming but his greatest love was his family. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.


Walter is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Charlie Mallory, his brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Malvina Deaton, his brother, John Deaton and his grandson, Jeremy McDonald. Surviving to cherish his memories are his wife of 62 years, Sue Deaton of Little York, his children, Cindy and Tim Melton of Hardinsburg, Carol and Eugene Bowling of Little York, John and Olivia Deaton of Paoli, James Deaton of Crothersville, Joseph and Joyce Deaton of Little York and William and Alesia Deaton of Coventry, Connecticut, his sister and brother-in-law, Malvery and Ron McKim of Sellersburg, and two brothers, Bill Deaton and Ronnie Deaton, both of Little York as well as 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.


Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Monday, April 28, 2025, and one hour prior to the service at 11:00 am Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg. Pastor Rodney Sweeney of Mt. Hebron Church of Christ will officiate. Concluding services and interment will follow at Little York Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given in Walter's memory to the Little York Fire Dept or Mt. Hebron Church of Christ. Please share memories and condolences at www.collinsfuneralhome.net.
