Outside the Walls' "Love Dinner" on Valentine's Day to support Washington County families

Outside the Walls, a Washington County nonprofit dedicated to helping residents in times of need, will host a "Love Dinner" on Friday, Feb. 14, at 5 p.m. at Southern Hills Church.

The community-wide event is free to attend and will feature a lasagna dinner, silent auction, and dessert auction, with all proceeds benefiting Outside the Walls’ ongoing outreach efforts across the county.

Outside the Walls (OTW) works to “bridge the gaps” for Washington County residents who fall outside the reach of traditional aid programs. While approximately 25 service providers operate locally, limited resources and strict eligibility requirements can leave some families without help. OTW partners with these organizations to provide short-term assistance when other options are unavailable.

The nonprofit’s work includes emergency assistance such as help with utilities, shelter, counseling referrals, and essential home repairs. One of its most visible efforts is volunteer-led home improvement projects, including wheelchair ramp builds that allow residents to remain safely in their homes.

OTW also serves families who experience sudden financial hardship due to job loss, reduced income, or business closures. In addition to short-term financial support when possible, the organization offers budgetary guidance and referrals aimed at helping families regain stability and protect their assets.

Senior citizens are another key focus of the organization’s mission. Fixed incomes often force seniors to choose between necessities when unexpected expenses arise, such as a failing furnace or water heater. OTW helps address these urgent needs so seniors are not forced to sacrifice food, medication, or safe living conditions.

Any resident of Washington County, Indiana can contact Outside the Walls and we will do everything within our power to get them the help they need,” the organization states on its website. “We want all residents of Washington County to live a positive and self-sustaining life.

Community members can support Outside the Walls in several ways, including hosting a table at the Love Dinner. Tables seat eight guests, and all full-table hosts will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card. Individuals and groups are also encouraged to volunteer for single-day projects or longer commitments, particularly for ramp builds.

Those unable to attend the event can still support the mission through one-time or recurring donations. More information about donations, volunteering, or receiving assistance is available at outsidethewallswashco.org.

The Love Dinner is open to the public, and organizers encourage residents to attend, bring friends, and help strengthen the network of support that Outside the Walls provides throughout Washington County.
