Richard "Ricky" David Sorrels
June 22, 1970 – April 29, 2026
Richard "Ricky" David Sorrels, 55, of Huggin Hollow Rd in Martinsville, Indiana, passed away on April 29, 2026, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Born on June 22, 1970, to Ursula Jones Nickelson and the late Daniel Lee Sorrels, Ricky grew up in Washington County, Indiana. As the eldest of the siblings, he was the family’s true adventurer. He possessed an unrestrained soul and lived life at full volume, often seeking the next celebration and following a path that was uniquely his own.
A skilled brick mason by trade, Ricky was a proud member of the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union Local 4 and worked for many years with Heimbrock. He took great pride in his craft, leaving a lasting legacy through the structures he helped build.
Though he navigated many difficult storms and personal battles throughout his journey, his family chooses to remember the vibrant, free-spirited man who loved a good time and cherished his independence. A quintessential free spirit, he moved through the world with a wandering heart, and his family finds comfort knowing that his restless soul has finally found the lasting peace and stillness that eluded him here.
Ricky is survived by his sons, Alex Sorrels and Steven Southerland; his daughter, Tennile Sorrels; his mother, Ursula Jones Nickelson; and his stepmother, Sherry Sorrels. He was a beloved brother to Jonathan Sorrels (wife Sarah) of Salem, Indiana; Barry Jung London England, Patrick Chastain (wife Robin) of Scottsburg, Indiana; Janis Kidd (husband Matt) of Salem, Indiana; Dwight Sorrels (Larissa Williams) of Salem, Indiana; Jenetta Underwood (husband Patrick) of Paoli, Indiana; and Melinda Sorrels of Salem, Indiana. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will dearly remember their uncle’s spirited nature.
Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Lee Sorrels, and his niece, Alyssa Chastain.
In keeping with Ricky’s style, family and friends will celebrate his life and his final journey with a bonfire gathering to be held at a later date. He is finally free.
