Investigators have released the identity of the 14-year-old who died Sunday evening in Salem. He has been identified as Jameson Crawford, 14, of Salem. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
According to the original release from the Indiana State Police, detectives from the Sellersburg Post are investigating the death, which resulted from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. Sunday at a residence on East Oak Drive.
The Salem Police Department responded to the scene and located the deceased juvenile. Officers then requested assistance from Indiana State Police detectives and crime scene investigators.
As part of the preliminary investigation, Detective Travis Baker took a second 14-year-old male into custody at the scene in connection with the death. The teen has been charged with reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, and was transported to the Allen County Juvenile Center.
An autopsy was conducted Monday morning in Salem as part of the ongoing investigation.
A candlelight vigil and balloon release in memory of Crawford is planned for Tuesday, April 21 at 8:30 p.m. The gathering will take place at 108 N. Fair Street in Salem, next to the fairgrounds. Organizers are asking attendees to bring their own lanterns and balloons.
