Waterline construction that began April 1 along South Main St in Salem is in full swing. Traffic on South Main was limited earlier in the week in order to create enough space to work on the waterline upgrade project. With aims to enhance the quality of city water and modernize infrastructure, the city has invested in this project that is expected to take two to three months to finish.

“We’re doing the waterline upgrade,” said Danny Walker. “It’s a city project that will probably take two or three months to complete. It’s just going to be from here (the south side of the square) to the Wendy’s restaurant. We’re replacing the main, and that’s about it.”
Walker said that traffic on South Main St should return to normal once they reach Poplar St.

In a previous statement leading up to the beginning of the project, Mayor Justin Green said that the project is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to enhance water quality and better serve residents and businesses. Due to the water line being in direct conflict with road improvements, the work is fully funded through grants secured by the Mayor’s Office via the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). There will be no additional cost to city ratepayers.
“We are excited to continue making investments that improve essential services for our community,” said Mayor Green. “This project is a step forward ensuring reliable and high-quality water access for our residents, and we are grateful for the state and federal partners.”
