Terry Alan Terrell

Terry Alan Terrell, 73, New Salisbury, passed peacefully at his home on Friday, May 22, 2026. Known as ‘Vern’ to his friends, Terry was born in Scottsburg on August 17, 1952, to the late Roen and Lena Terrell.


He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years, including duty in Vietnam. He also survived the Beirut bomb blast in 1983 and was awarded the Purple Heart. Throughout his military career, he earned numerous medals, awards, and certificates.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant sister, Trina Terrell; his brother, Tony Terrell; and his wife, Linda Purdy Terrell. Terry is survived by his daughters, Tatum (Cullen) Combs of Salem and Robin (Matt) Gettelfinger of New Salisbury; his step-son Brent (Barbara) Blackwood of Eastaboga, Alabama; 12 grandchildren, including Bowie Blackwood, whom he helped raise, Andrew Hamilton, Sadie (Justin) Smith, Shelbie (Cody) Capehart, Tierra (David) Gaffney, Jesse Combs, Jamie Combs, Bailyn ‘Kai’ Combs, Leland Combs, Anthony Combs, Kaitlyn Gettelfinger and Colton Gettelfinger; four great-granddaughters, Tatum, Hadley and Scottie Smith, and Madeline Capehart; his sisters, Trudy Terrell of New Salisbury and Telicia (Jerry) Boggess of Salem; as well as three nieces and two nephews.


In keeping of Terry’s wishes, cremation was chosen and final burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. with full military honors. The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of Hosparus of Louisville and Southern Indiana for their kindness and care during his final days. Magnolia Crematory handled the arrangements.
