Verneda Hoke

Submitted by Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home

Verneda Irene (Packard) Hoke, age 81, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2026, in New Albany. Born October 9, 1944, in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Woodrow Edward and Sadie Irene (Moore) Packard.

Verneda loved the simple things in life that brought her the greatest joy. She earned her Master Gardener degree and took great pride in creating a beautiful garden that became a peaceful bird sanctuary, where she could spend hours watching and caring for the birds she loved. She also enjoyed getting lost in a good book, but nothing meant more to her than time spent with her family. Whether she was tending her flowers, relaxing with a book, or making memories with the people she loved most, Verneda found happiness in the little things and made those around her feel at home.

She is survived by her three children: Lisa (Bill) Harty, Brent Barkley, Brandon (Shannon) Barkley; one brother: Richard Packard; four grandchildren: Ryan Young, Sierra Burton, Derek and Jacob Barkley; and one great-grandchild; Jackson Hart.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Irene Packard; her husband: Gerald "Gene" Hoke; one son: Brian Barkley; one brother: Clarance Packard; and one sister: Oneda Crane.

Per Verneda's wishes cremation has been chosen; private graveside services will be held at a later date and time with Jeff Williams and Mindi Garrity officiating.

Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home was entrusted with funeral care.
