On the evening of Monday, September 8, Washington County Sheriff Brent Miller reports that jail officers discovered an attempted suicide inside the Washington County Detention Center on Jackson Street.
At approximately 6:26 p.m., officers found a 51-year-old female inmate, who had been booked into the facility on September 5 on a drug-related charge, unresponsive in her individual cell. Jail staff had reportedly interacted with her shortly before shift change. During head count, officers discovered her in medical distress.
Emergency Medical Services were immediately called. Responders provided aid, and the inmate was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Per standard procedure, Sheriff Scottie Maples of Clark County was requested to provide outside investigators to review the incident.
Sheriff Miller made a comment on the seriousness of the situation and noted that the department's thoughts are with the inmate and her family. "We are committed to full transparency, which is why we requested an outside agency to investigate," said Miller. "The safety and well-being of those in our custody remains a top priority."
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.
