West Washington Celebrates "An Afternoon of the Arts"

On Sunday, March 16th, the multipurpose gym at West Washington Jr./Sr. High School was standing room-only as the music, choir, art, and American Sign Language classes of Mrs. Ledgerwood, Mrs. Knapp, Mrs. Chastain, and Mr. Harkness took the stage for "An Afternoon of the Arts".

Upon entering the gymnasium, visitors were treated to a vast collection of paintings and sculptures by Mrs. Chastain's Visual Arts class, where they could vote for their favorite artist.

As the ballots were being cast, the pre-show performances were in full swing. Mr. Harkness led his ASL class in a spirited interpretation of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", while the Pep Band performed classic hits such as "Sweet Home Alabama", "Brown Eyed Girl", and "Down on the Corner". ISSMA Gold winners Gabe Johnson and Abbi Ferguson also sang solo songs "I'm Bound Away" and "Who'll Buy My Lavender".

The concert officially began with Mrs. Ledgerwood leading her piano students in a selection of pieces including "Scarborough Fair", "Moonlight Sonata", "The Entertainer", and "Piano Man". Afterwards, Mr. Harkness' ASL class signed through Lauren Daigle's "Rescue".

Mrs. Ledgerwood's guitar students followed up with "American Pie" and "Dust in the Wind" (video below).

Mr. Harkness' class interpreted "This is Me" from The Greatest Showman, and Mrs. Knapp's 5th and 6th grade choir class continued the musical theatre theme with an excerpt from "Wicked", accompanied by Aaron Lucas:

Mr. Harkness' class performed once more, signing through "I'm Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog...

...and the High School Choir wrapped up the concert with "I Sing Because I'm Happy", "Don't Be Seen", "Elijah Rock", and The Chord's doo-wop hit "Sh-Boom".

After the concert concluded, Mrs. Chastain took the stage to announce the winners of the art show. The full list of winners is included at the end of this article.

"Both staff and students put in a lot of work to make the concert and art show entertaining for the audience as well as showcase the talents of our students," ASL teacher Mr. Harkness shared afterwards. "I'm just proud to be a part of it all."
