A Humbling Lesson on Ego, Gym Anxiety, and Why Nobody Is Actually Watching You

I recently told my workout partner a story about Ellen and me getting ready for date night that left him shaking his head.
As we were getting ready, Ellen looked over at me and said,“I’m over here looking like a slob, and you’re looking like a model.”
Now, apparently the elevator of the male brain does not go all the way to the top—because with a pride-filled smile, I responded with a simple, heartfelt, completely inappropriate… “Thank you.”
My workout buddy just shook his head and said he’s surprised Ellen hasn’t killed me yet. My guess? It’s because, according to her, I look like a model.
In that moment of stupidity, I wasn’t thinking about her or how she felt. I was solely focused on how good I looked in my new shirt. And boy… did I look good. LOL.
But if we’re being honest, I’m not alone in this self-centered way of thinking. You’re a self-centered heathen too.
Let me prove it.
How do you determine whether a group photo you’re in is a good one?
Ha ha… got you.
You’re the first person you look for. If you look good, it’s a great picture. It doesn’t matter if Susie is looking away and Billy is picking his nose—again.
Young or old, we all do this.
I recently invited one of my longtime patients to take a picture with me showing off our new MFC T-shirts with this year’s theme: Strong Roots. Lasting Impact.
Let’s just say it took several takes to get it “just right”—and it definitely wasn’t because of me… because, you know, I’m a model.
Because of our self-centered viewpoint, many people carry the preconceived notion that if they’re a “newbie” in the gym or a wellness center, everyone is going to judge them.
I hear it all the time:“I really should get a YMCA membership and start going… but I’ve got too much giggle in my wiggle to go there.”
If you’re new to the gym scene and feeling self-conscious, let me let you in on a little secret:
Nobody cares.
They’re focused on themselves—because they’re self-centered too.
I know that sounds harsh, but it’s the truth. That gym rat with arms the size of your head? He’s focused on one thing: his workout. And honestly, the long-term gym goers are usually just happy to see you there, joining the gym family.
So here’s my encouragement to you: take a leap of faith and do something for you. Don’t give those other self-centered heathens a second thought.
Give yourself the gift of health.
One healthy habit can create a domino effect in your life—and going to the gym might just be the cornerstone habit that changes everything.
Your friend,
Dr. Mosier
