All three Washington County school corporations have made the decision to alter the normal school day schedule for Tuesday, January 20, largely due to the upcoming Monday night College Football Playoff National Championship between the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers and No. 10 Miami Hurricanes.

The Hoosiers, ranked number one in the country, have had nothing short of a historic season. The 15-0 team has managed to remain undefeated (possibly 16-0 if they secure a win on Monday). They have won at the Rose and Peach Bowls against Alabama and Oregon, and Quarterback Fernando Mendoza was awarded the Heisman Trophy. Many of these accomplishments are firsts in the entirety of the program’s history. The National Championship game, played in Miami, is scheduled to take place on Monday at 7:30 pm.
To honor this historic moment, and to make joining in on the festivities easier for students and staff, Salem, East Washington, and West Washington have all elected to alter Tuesday’s schedule.
“The superintendents of all three county school corporations have been in discussion since Sunday afternoon, and, together have decided to recognize a historic day in Indiana with a two-hour delay on Tuesday, January 20, 2026,” said East Washington Superintendent Rebecca Jones. “We want to acknowledge that this is not something we do often. However, we recognize that many students will likely be up later than usual to watch this significant event, and beginning the school day slightly later allows us to support student well-being while still maintaining a full instructional day.”

East Washington Superintendent Jones continued by recognizing that this decision might cause scheduling issues such as parents/guardians still needing to report to work at their regular time. To help with this, East Washington will be offering morning childcare to the students that require supervision during the two-hour delay. Childcare services begin at 7:30 am, and parents are instructed to enter with their child at Door #2. Breakfast will be served to the students attending childcare services.
