"Food Trucks on the Bricks" brings in steady crowd, Mayor discusses future events

Updated: 1 day ago

This past Friday, October 24, food trucks gathered to line the sides of Market Street in the most recent edition of the “on the Bricks” series titled, “Food Trucks on the Bricks.”

In total, six food trucks swung by to participate in the event:

  • The Thirsty Hippie

  • Mama B’s Kitchen

  • Busy B’z

  • Double Dipped

  • Taqueria Hernandez

  • Heavenly Hot Dogs

“The turnout has been very consistent,” said Mayor Justin Green. “This has been our base-year. Everything we’re doing on the bricks is a new idea and concept. The food trucks are a perfect fit for this time of year. It’s not too hot, and everybody can sit out and enjoy it. We opened at 4:00 pm, and it has been very steady since then. I’m very pleased with it.

“My thought for next year is that the events that worked will be permanent, and the ones that ended up being a little iffy, we might tweak a bit,” he added. “But this seems to be an easy one. I wrestled with how many trucks I should invite. I guessed six, and that seems to be the magic number. But these events are just perfect, and I really want to continue doing them. I wasn’t really expecting massive crowds on any of them since it’s our first year, but I hope that they just continue to grow each year.”

Mayor Green then gave a bit of a sneak-peek as far as what to expect for this year’s “Christmas Magic” event.

“December 5 is the third annual Christmas Magic,” said Green. “It is an afternoon into the evening where our community can come out. Just like we did the past two years, Christmas Magic will include sleigh rides with the horses, the Santa House and vendors as well. The vendors are actually going to be set up in Purlee Plaza. The sleigh rides encompass about six blocks, and we’ll also have hot chocolate and cookies at H&R Bakery as well as Mrs. Claus (played by Rebecca Marshall) at the Salem Apothecary. As people work their way around the square, there’s plenty to do.”

Mayor Green plans to expand this series to hopefully have an “on the Bricks” event each month. He even stated that he would like to do two per month if it’s feasible. Weather permitting, he has plans for "Paws on the Bricks” sometime in November.

“That is one that is very weather sensitive,” said Green. “We can’t bring a bunch of dogs and cats out here and expect them to not overheat or get too cold. But I think if we remain in the 60s like we have been, I can do that here in a couple of weeks. So, if everything comes together, we’ll do that, then Christmas Magic, and then we’ll probably take a break and start back up maybe after February.”

With strong turnouts and what appears to be growing enthusiasm with each new event, the “on the Bricks” series seems to have begun solidifying itself as a new tradition in Salem. Be sure to join in on the fun this December 5 with the annual “Christmas Magic” event on the Salem Square!
