A new way to inspire creativity is now open to the public in Salem, thanks to the efforts of middle school art teacher Gwendolyn Dowling and her students.

Located on the sidewalk by the drop-off circle at Salem Middle School, near the football field, the freshly installed library box functions much like the other little free book libraries around the county - except instead of books, it’s filled with art supplies.
Dowling says the idea came from a desire to get more students and families involved in the arts.
"I’ve always loved the little free libraries, and I started thinking about how we could do something like this with art," she said. "Why can’t we have a little free art supply library where people can donate and take art supplies?"

With funds raised over the years by the Salem Middle School Art Club, Dowling purchased the art library box and brought the idea to life. Students Clara Zinser and Addie Buchanan helped design and paint the box, and head custodian Kent Payne installed it last week.
"The students really did a wonderful job painting it," Dowling said. "I’m so thankful for their help."
The library box is open year-round and stocked with a variety of craft materials. Community members are encouraged to both take and donate items, though Dowling asks that paint and scissors be left out for safety and practicality.
"Feel free to leave all kinds of paper, crayons, markers, stickers, pens, stamps, felt, glue, beads - really anything that can be used for crafts!" Dowling said.
The goal is to make art accessible for everyone in the community, especially children looking for creative activities during the summer months.
"Art is so vital to our children’s lives," Dowling said. "It fosters creativity, develops emotional expression, builds critical thinking skills, and so much more. We hope the community will help make this a success by donating, taking, and having fun with hands-on art activities!"
