If you’ve ever added a few drops of essential oil to your diffuser and felt your whole space shift- from calmer to brighter, maybe more grounded- you know how powerful it can be. Here’s the thing though: your diffuser needs regular care to keep working its magic effectively (and safely!)
Whether you're brand-new to diffusing or just need a refresher, here's how to get the best out of your essential oil diffuser- and a couple of my favorite blends to get you started.
Which Diffuser Is Right for You?
There are a few main types of essential oil diffusers- each with its own function and benefits:
Ultrasonic Diffuser (AKA the normal one)
Uses water and ultrasonic vibrations to disperse a fine mist.
Pros: Doubles as a humidifier, quiet, budget-friendly.
Cons: Needs regular cleaning, can dilute oil scent.
Nebulizing Diffuser
Uses pressurized air to atomize pure essential oils- no water needed.
Pros: Strong, undiluted scent; great for large spaces.
Cons: Uses more oil, can be noisy, pricier.
Reed Diffuser
A glass container with reeds that soak up and release essential oils.
Pros: No electricity needed, stylish, passive scent.
Cons: Subtle aroma, not ideal for large areas, can collect dust.
Passive Diffuser
Includes diffuser jewelry, clay stones, or wooden blocks.
Pros: Great for travel or personal use, no power needed.
Cons: Very mild aroma, no scent control.
Heat Diffuser
Uses heat (like a candle warmer) to evaporate oils.
Pros: Inexpensive, simple.
Cons: Heat can damage oils, reduces therapeutic benefits.
My recommendation? Try an ultrasonic diffuser—they're affordable, easy to use, and widely available. They’re by far the most balanced option, and the most popular. If you already have a water diffuser, it’s most likely this type.
How to Use Your Diffuser
Most ultrasonic diffusers are super simple to use:
Add clean, room-temperature water up to the fill line (filtered if possible).
Add essential oil—how much? Check below!
Pop the lid back on, press the button, and enjoy the mist!
How Many Drops Should You Use?
Here’s a handy guide for how many drops to use based on diffuser capacity:
100 mL – 3 to 5 drops
200 mL – 6 to 10 drops
300 mL – 8 to 12 drops
500 mL+ – 10 to 15+ drops (depending on room size & oil strength)
Some Tips:
If you have pets, make sure they have free range and can leave the room if they become uncomfortable. It’s always good to remember that they’re a lot more sensitive to smells than humans, so it’s very important to use diffusers safely!
Start with fewer drops- especially if you're using strong oils like peppermint or eucalyptus, or if you're diffusing in a small room. You can always add more if needed!
I do not recommend diffusing oils at all around kids less than 2 years old, and especially 1 and younger. Until the age of 10, stay away from strong oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon, etc.
For best practices, use your diffuser for 20-30 minutes at a time, then take a break. The break can be as short as 30 mins, or as long as a couple hours. A lot of diffusers have an intermittent setting in them to allow for this to happen without you having to keep an eye on it, if that’s important to you!
How to Clean Your Diffuser (And Why It Matters!)
Oil and water don’t mix, so residue builds up fast. A dirty diffuser can clog, smell funky, or reduce the therapeutic benefits of your oils.
Quick clean (every 2–3 uses):
Dump out leftover water
Wipe the inside with a soft cloth or paper towel
Rinse and dry before next use
Deep clean (weekly or as needed):
Fill halfway with water + 1 tsp white vinegar
Let run for 5–10 minutes
Dump and wipe clean
Your nose—and your diffuser—will thank you!
