Leader Publishing Company Announces Paper Sale

The Leader Publishing Company of Salem, Inc. is in the process of closing its doors, and owner Nancy Grossman is inviting the public to take advantage of a large paper sale.

"Leader Publishing Company of Salem, Inc. actually used to be more involved in commercial printing than it was in the newspapers," Grossman said. "We printed books, checks, point of purchase signs and circulars for every Jay C Store (55 at the time), labels for all of Link Handle Company’s handles, newsletters and magazines, cookbooks, business forms—an endless number of things. The paper stock we are getting rid of is stock that was left over from various jobs.

"Most stock we ordered were in parent-sized sheets. Since most people aren’t interested in 23” x 35” and other various sizes of paper, we are cutting down most stock to 8,5” x 11”.  That will run through copy machines, printers and fit into binders the easiest.

"There are all types of papers.  A lot of it is around copy-machine weight or slightly heavier. Colors range from whites, pastels, neon, fiber-flecked, etc. We also have a wide variety of cover-weight stocks in various colors (we used a lot of this for book covers, tickets, art prints and posters).

"Many papers are coated papers and come in various finishes, like glossy, matte, coated-one-side board, enamel (also glossy), etc. We have done tests, and the coated stock also runs through copy machines and printers just fine—the toner does not smear or flake off. Actually, the coated papers are perfect if someone is making copies of photos (photographic stock is actually a coated paper). Coated paper also works fine for ink pens, pencils, markers, oil pencils, roller ball pens, Flair pens, highlighter pens—I didn’t have a crayon in captivity to test out this type.

"We also have a huge stock of large-format heavy index sheets. I left these in the original size since 4-H'ers often use these for their projects. Most sheet sizes are 22.5” x 35” or around that size. There are all colors—whites, pastels and a few neon.  Instead of paying over $1.00 per sheet at Walmart or Staples, these sheets are on sale for $0.21 to $0.33 per sheet.  There is an additional 10% discount if someone buys 50 or more sheets at one time.

"We had a few events geared for local teachers—including the three school systems, home schools, etc. I have recently reached out to an Amish school to offer them supplies," Grossman concluded. "They plan to come this week."

Additional material currently being sold includes:

  • Free note pads

  • A comb-binding machine including combs (most people use them for cookbooks)

  • Tags with reinforced holes in various sizes

  • Numbered tickets (numbers on event description portion and on the information portion that is submitted). Can be custom printed on anyone’s copy machine or printer.

  • Free employment applications

  • Yard sale signs

  • Door hangers that can be printed on copy machine or printer

  • Envelopes

  • Panel cards

  • Stationery

The Leader office is open on Walnut Street in Salem on Mondays through Fridays, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Grossman encourages the public to stop by anytime. "I would love for the public to take advantage of this paper blow-out. I could take everything to recycling, but it would be such a huge waste of perfectly good paper. Once supplies are gone, the event is over. Then we will move on to selling off office furniture, equipment and supplies."
