Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Zac Andry is finally home after spending over three months in a Louisville rehabilitation center recovering from gunshot wounds sustained during a traffic stop in early January.

According to Indiana State Police, Deputy Andry was shot by 33-year-old Austin Schepers after pulling him over near the intersection of U.S. Highway 150 and State Road 56 in West Baden. Investigators say Andry suspected criminal activity and asked Schepers to step out of the vehicle. Schepers allegedly opened fire, striking Andry, then fled the scene with a female passenger.

The passenger was later taken into custody in Orangeville, and a multi-agency search for Schepers followed. On the night of January 4th, law enforcement located Schepers at a home on Wheeler Avenue in Louisville. A confrontation ensued, during which Schepers was shot and killed by police.
The road to recovery was long and hard for Deputy Andry. In addition to wounds from being shot in the head, chest, neck, and shoulder, he suffered both a collapsed lung and a brain aneurism in the hospital. Despite the odds, Andry was discharged around 1:00 P.M. Wednesday afternoon and transported in a police procession up through Louisville, New Albany, Greenville, Palmyra, Fredericksburg, Hardinsburg, Paoli, and finally back home to French Lick. As the procession came up Highway 150, countless people lined the streets to welcome Deputy Andry home.

Volunteer Livonia firefighter Darren Byler, one of many various emergency personnel from all over Southern Indiana who came out to show support and join the procession, remarked on the spectacle. "It's so impressive, we didn't know how big it would actually be," he said. "The support is just unbelievable today. It's so moving. It really is."
