Pekin is preparing for its 196th Fourth of July Celebration, a two-day event organizers describe as the nation’s oldest consecutive Independence Day celebration.
The 2026 event is scheduled for July 3 and 4 at Pekin Park with the time “Our American Story,” tying this year’s festivities to the nation’s 250th anniversary. Organizers expect the event to draw thousands of visitors from across the region.

According to organizers, the annual celebration dates back to 1830 and has remained a longstanding tradition in the Southern Indiana community for nearly two centuries. Over the years, the event has been held at several locations in and around Pekin before settling at its current home in what is now Pekin Community Park.
This year’s celebration will include many of the activities that have become staples of the event, including live music, food vendors, a flea market, contests, children’s activities, fireworks, and more. The annual parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on July 4.
A major feature of this year’s celebration will be Pekin’s bicentennial time capsule, which was buried in 1976 and is expected to be displayed as part of the community’s observance of the nation’s semiquincentennial. Organizers also plan to collect items for a new time capsule intended to preserve memories and traditions from the present day. The new time capsule monument is being sponsored by the Washington County Community Foundation.
The July 3 schedule will also include a free concert in Pekin Park sponsored by Washington County Tourism, followed by a fireworks show at dark.
The event is organized by the Pekin Community Betterment Organization, a volunteer-led nonprofit that has overseen the celebration for generations. Today, the annual event remains one of the community’s most visible traditions, drawing residents, former residents, and visitors to Pekin each summer for the holiday.
