From a press release of the Washington County Community Foundation:
Lisa Redmiles was awarded a grant through the Mahuron Education Fund of the Washington County Community Foundation to support an innovative mathematics initiative designed to strengthen students’ foundational algebra skills.
The grant funded the development and classroom implementation of Product/Sum Cards, an interactive math game that helps students build fluency with multiplication, factor relationships, and number sense. In the activity, students are given the product and sum of two numbers and must determine the original pair. This foundational skill directly supports understanding and factoring quadratic expressions, as well as solving other algebraic equations.
The Product/Sum Card game is used before, during and after instruction on factoring quadratics. By strengthening students’ understanding of number relationships ahead of formal instruction, the activity prepares them for greater success when working with algebraic expressions.
Redmiles said students have responded positively, noting that the game is both engaging and relaxing. Many reported that they clearly saw the connection between the game and factoring once the algebra unit began and felt that playing beforehand made learning the concept easier. Students also appreciated revisiting the game periodically to maintain and strengthen their fluency.
The Washington County Community Foundation plays a vital role in supporting local education initiatives through grants like the Mahuron Education Fund. The Foundation works to connect charitable resources with community needs, providing funding opportunities that enhance educational experiences and promote student achievement throughout Washington County.
“This grant has allowed us to create meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities that build confidence and deepen understanding,” said Remiles. “We are grateful to the Washington County Community Foundation for investing in our students and supporting innovative approaches to teaching and learning.”
