The Board of Works & Public Safety meeting on Monday, September 8 was marked by a special occasion, as recent Salem Police Department hire Tacoma Browning was officially sworn in. Making the event more special was the presence of Browning's father, Crothersville Police Chief Matt Browning, who assisted in the ceremony.
"We're glad to have you," said Mayor and Board of Works member Justin Green. "We appreciate all of our policemen, and when we get a chance to have a new hire, we certainly want to welcome you. We appreciate your interest in the City of Salem, working with us, protecting us, and serving us."
The swearing in ceremony then began, with Chief Mills issuing the oath and Chief Browning holding the Bible.
Chief Mills shared that Officer Browning will be attending the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in January.
"We are excited to welcome Officer Browning to the team and congratulate him on this significant achievement," the Salem Police Department said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. "He will now begin his field training alongside our experienced officers as he takes the next steps in his law enforcement career. Please join us in welcoming and congratulating Officer Tacoma Browning!"
The Salem Police Department also shared that they are still hiring, with a physical ability test scheduled at the Salem High School track on September 27 at 9am. Interested applicants will be required to pass the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy exit standards, which include a vertical jump of 16", 29 sit-ups in one minute, a 300-meter run in 71 seconds, 25 push-ups, and a 1.5 mile run within 16:28 minutes.
