On May 6, a decision was made by the Washington County Board of Commissioners to award a paving bid to Temple & Temple, despite the existence of a nearly $80,000 lower bid from C&R Construction in Harrison County. On June 10, that decision was rescinded due to a letter from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Finally! The Eastern Girls' Tennis Team can use that word as they were able to claim their first ever tennis sectional title in school history. “It is very special and surreal to say that this team won the very first sectional in Eastern Tennis,” said Eastern Coach Ame Hein.

Shirley Yvonne Maack, 84, of Salem, Indiana, passed away on June 4, 2025 at Ascension St. Vincent Salem Hospital. Born on March 19, 1941 in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Arley Brewer and Dorothy Brewer.

On Friday, June 6, a localized cloudburst over parts of Washington County resulted in flash flooding and multiple water rescues throughout the evening.

At approximately 4:41 pm on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies, Washington County EMS, and local fire departments responded to State Road 56 East near Heritage Chapel Road to investigate a motor vehicle accident involving a semi and a red 4-door vehicle.

The annual WHAS Crusade for Children, a local fire department tradition, will be well underway this weekend. Firefighters all across our local area join together each year to raise funds for children in need. Last year, the 70th iteration, brought in $5,700,525.71, and since beginning in 1954, the crusade has brought in more than $217 million.

Teresa Rutherford, age 74, of Borden passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at her residence. Born September 2, 1950 in New Albany, she was the daughter of the late Joy Wheeler and Dorothy (Hammonds) Wheeler. On October 14, 1991, she married Paul "Bob" Rutherford who preceded her in death on January 19, 2024.

Lorna Strojny, age 72, of Borden passed away peacefully Friday, May 30, 2025. Born March 19, 1953 in New Albany, she was the daughter of the late Joy Wheeler and Dorothy (Hammonds) Wheeler.

James Hobart White, age 81, of Salem, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. He was born on April 6, 1944, in Mitchell, Indiana, to James S. and Agnes (Porter) White. James was a 1962 graduate of Mitchell High School.

Michael "Duff" Scott Fultz, age 59 of Salem passed away May 23,2025 at Baptist Health Floyd. Mr. Fultz was born September 10, 1965, in Salem, the son of Randall Fultz and Barbara Hasty Gilstrap. He was a member of VFW #6636 and American Legion Post #41. Micheal was a former forklift driver for KYB in Franklin, Indiana.
