Candice "Candy" Sue Brough

Submitted by Dawalt Funeral Home

Our mom, Candice "Candy" Sue Brough (formerly McCoskey), passed away recently, and honestly, the world is going to be a lot quieter and a lot less interesting without her. She was incredibly strong, sweet, and had a hilarious, spunky attitude that you couldn't ignore.

Candy was born in El Paso, Texas and was almost born in Mexico because her mom loved shopping in Juarez so much. That love for shopping definitely stuck with Candy her whole life. She grew up in Erin, Tennessee before her family moved to Pekin, Indiana where she graduated school from Eastern and lived out the rest of her life there.

When she was younger, Mom was all about being outside. She loved traveling, camping, and heading into the Tennessee mountains. She always had a real curiosity about the wildlife out there, and she’d leave food out for the local animals just so she could sit by the window and watch them. Later on, she loved filling up the bird feeders in her garden so she could watch the birds get their fill. She took serious pride in her plants, too. From her rose bushes outside to all the houseplants Darlene gave her over the years. She even kept a bonsai tree alive that Zachary and Kristen got her about 25 years ago, which is still living today.

As she got older, she traded the camping trips for some well-deserved peace and comfort. A perfect day for her was wrapped up in her favorite robe, drinking a hot cup of coffee, and watching her soap operas with her dog and best pal Roscoe, right by her side.

Mom had a big heart and would do anything for the people she loved. She showed that throughout her life. For as long as we can remember, she donated to different children’s charities every single month. She loved keeping all the little stamps and magnets they’d send her in the mail as a thank-you. She also just loved being around the younger generation, getting her hair done, and blasting the oldies. She was a huge fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Elvis. And if you ever visited her, there was a solid chance she was eating a tomato and mayonnaise sandwich.

The best thing about Mom was that she was 100% unfiltered. She was bull-headed, spoke her mind freely, and always told it like it was. You always knew exactly where you stood with her, and that honesty is exactly why people loved her so much. She was an amazing storyteller, and her absolute favorite stories to tell were about her dad and her brother. Whether she was hitting up a winery with her friends or sitting in a rocking chair on the porch with her kids and grandkids, she was just happy to be with her people.

Through all the ups and downs, she always told us: "Everything will always work out the way it's supposed to."

Candy is back together now with her husband Johnny Ray Brough, who passed away just about 10 months ago, after they spent around 40 years married. She was also reunited with her mom, Loretta Sue; her dad, Wayne Lahue; her brother, Wayne "Butch" McCoskey; her favorite dog, Roscoe; and a lot of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who went before her.

She leaves behind a big family who loves her like crazy. Her kids, Kristen Voyles (and her husband Jeremy), Zachary Brough (and his wife Shalana), and Michael Dwayne Jordan. Her grandkids, Skyler, Kendra, Heavyn, and Rosabelle. Her great-grandkids, Leilah and Dakota. She’s also survived by her aunt Jean McCoskey out in Washington State, her lifelong best friend who was basically a sister, Sheila Campbell, and a ton of cousins across Tennessee, Indiana, and Washington.

We love you, Mom, and we miss you already. Like you always told us, we know everything will work out the way it’s supposed to. Rest easy.
