Eagle Scout project includes building benches for SHS tennis
Hoping to give players a place to sit and rest, as well as store their equipment, Salem senior Van Stephens has chosen to design and build benches for the tennis courts at Salem High School. The project is to help him complete his long journey to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America.
“I will be making a total of eight benches: six regular sized and two larger ones,” said Stephens, who is also a member of the team. “The purpose for these benches are just a more practical area for storing items and resting between matches.”
He said the idea for the project came about because he has been playing the sport since he was in sixth grade
“We've always wanted benches and since we just built new courts, it feels like a cherry on top to be able to add the benches,” he said, adding that he hopes to have the project completed by the end of the boys tennis season.
Stephens has been in scouts since first grade.
“It will be a big accomplishment for me to be able to achieve the Eagle Scout Rank,” he said. “I've dedicated my time to this goal for so many years and being able to have that title, which is so respected, will be a perfect symbol of that dedication.”
Stephens said he plans to attend Marian University and double major in psychology and ministerial studies.
