Shortly after 11:30 pm on Monday, September 15, Washington County emergency responders including the Salem Fire Department were dispatched to the area of the 500 block of Pilgrim Way in Salem, just north of the ballpark in regards to a shed on fire, with concerns that the fire was spreading.

Although the first filing date for the 2026 election isn’t until January 7, several local candidates have already announced plans to run. Among them is Washington County's current Deputy Auditor Michele Fleenor (R), who recently spoke with The Washington County Times  about her intention to run for County Auditor.

The September 16 Commissioners Meeting brought forth what seems to be a conclusion to the matter of the elimination of the fairgrounds groundskeeper position held by Randy Lee. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, and the approval of the last meeting’s agenda.

The 2026 Indiana primaries will be here before you know it. The primary elections are scheduled for May 5, and the Washington County Times has been busy interviewing the candidates who hope to receive your vote next spring. Leading up to the primaries, we will be releasing candidate interviews in order to keep you well informed.

Around 11:30 am on Thursday, September 11, the Washington County Emergency Management Agency announced that the Washington County Commissioners have issued a proclamation for a county-wide burn ban.

The Board of Works & Public Safety meeting on Monday, September 8 was marked by a special occasion, as recent Salem Police Department hire Tacoma Browning was officially sworn in. Making the event more special was the presence of Browning's father, Crothersville Police Chief Matt Browning, who assisted in the ceremony.

On the evening of Monday, September 8, Washington County Sheriff Brent Miller reports that jail officers discovered an attempted suicide inside the Washington County Detention Center on Jackson Street.

Darrell McGuffey, owner of "Smokin' Hawgs BBQ" came before the Board of Commissioners to request reimbursement for the business he lost during road construction on S Main St.

On September 4 at 8:44 am, Washington County emergency responders were dispatched to W Becks Mill Rd near S Cauble Rd in regard to a single-vehicle wreck with injuries. The dispatch call stated that the driver was experiencing chest pain after the accident.

On Wednesday, September 3, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, EMS and the Pierce-Polk Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) received a dispatch call at 4:58 pm regarding a single-vehicle wreck on SR-135 involving a downed powerline.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 3, a field fire near the area of E Bowsman Rd began to get out of control and spread to a nearby barn. The Salem Fire Department and Washington County EMS received the dispatch at 2:02 am from a third party caller.
