Sandy K. Knapp, age 76, of Salem, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital. Mrs. Knapp was born February 22, 1949, in Hamburg, Indiana. The daughter of Tom and Ann Hardy Sanford. Sandy was a member of Syria Christian Church. She was the 1st Deputy of the Treasurers Office and a West Washington class of 1967 graduate.

Anna Belle Martin Trueblood, age 105, of Salem, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Salem Crossing. Mrs. Trueblood was born March 17, 1920 to Logan J. and Mattie Luse Martin at the Martin home, south of Salem, Indiana.

The amazing donors of the Washington County Community Foundation awarded over $100,000 in grants through the Spring 2025 Grant Cycle. Grants are primarily awarded from the Foundation’s Touch Tomorrow Funds.

Monday, May 26, marked this year’s Memorial Day. It is often thought of simply as a day off work or a day spent around the grill with family and friends, but the real meaning goes far deeper than that. On Memorial Day, we honor and remember our fallen heroes throughout history that gave it all in the name of freedom.

It was a week to remember for West Washington High School senior Silas Batt. On Thursday, May 22, the 18-year-old pulled off a feat most golfers only dream of—hitting a hole-in-one at the Western Hills Country Club. The very next day, he walked across the stage to receive his high school diploma.

On Friday, May 16, the Washington County, Indiana Special Olympics athletes were joined by local law enforcement at Dunkin’ in Salem for the first annual “Cop on a Rooftop” fundraiser event. Beginning at 5 am and ending at noon, this fundraiser helps ensure that our local Special Olympics group is able to participate in the events that they love dearly. This year, they were able to bring in $470.

On Wednesday, May 21 at 7:07 pm, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Washington County Ambulance Service, and the Campbellsburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call in regard to a two-vehicle wreck located at 1661 N Smedley Rd near Smedley Church.

This morning, community leaders, local officials, and residents gathered at the Salem Little League ballfields to celebrate a major step forward in connectivity: the official ribbon cutting for newly installed public Wi-Fi. Thanks to a partnership between the Washington County Community Foundation, Jackson County REMC, and the City of Salem, patrons of the park can now enjoy free internet access.

 The Washington County Commissioners meeting this week was marked by passionate debates over the potential rescission of the 2022 decision to dissolve the town of Hardinsburg. Residents and officials voiced divergent opinions on whether the town should regain its incorporated status or remain under county governance.

Mr. Edward G. Nunley, age 87, of Salem, passed away Friday, May 16 at Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany. Mr. Nunley was born November 2, 1937, in Neon, Letcher County, Kentucky. He was the son of Carl Edward and Mandy Yeary Nunley. Edward retired from Kimball Manufacturing after 37 years.

Levi Michael Hebard, 21, of Salem, passed away Monday, May 19 at his home. Levi was born March 25, 2004 in Panama City, Florida. He had attended Legacy Life Church in Salem and Restoration Christian Church in Sellersburg. He was an employee of Burger King in Salem and was in training to become an Assistant Manager. He was starting Ivy Tech on June 9 for welding.
